India ranks as the second most populous country in the world with a population of over 130 crores.  Owing to this large population, there is a huge demand and market for medicines. The opening up of many large Multinational pharmaceutical companies in India signals the good potential and demand for this industry.

The term pharmacy was derived from the Greek word “pharmakon” meaning drug and the word “pharmakeutikos” meaning druggist.  This includes the compounding and dispensing of medications. The objective of pharmacy however, is to ensure the proper use of medications in a safe and effective manner. Pharmacists are expert professionals who have knowledge of these medicines and know how to administer it safely to patients.

Job Opportunities After completing D Pharma Degree in Private Sector:

  • Chemist/Pharmacist – As a qualified health professional who is familiar with the medicine ingredients and cautions to be exercised you will be required to dispense medicines and advice patients on its use. You will play a vital role in facilitating patients to use the medicines as per the guidelines and advice to ensure optimal performance.
  • Quality Analyst – You will be responsible during the testing phase of the production process to ensure that the product meets the stringent quality control standards.
  • Medical Transcriptionist – As a medical transcriptionist sometimes referred to as healthcare documentation specialists, you will be required to listen to voice recordings that physicians and other healthcare workers make and convert them into written reports. The candidate will have to review and edit medical documents created using speech recognition technology. Transcriptionists are useful while interpreting medical terminology and abbreviations while preparing patients’ medical histories, discharge summaries, and other documents.
  • Production Executive – As a production Executive you will assist in the creation and maintenance of production of drugs or medicines
  • Technical Supervisor- As a technical supervisor you will oversee the work of a team of Pharmacy Technicians that offer assistance to Pharmacists with the dispensing of medical prescriptions. You will be required to monitor daily activities and manage work schedules effectively to ensure that quality, production and customer service standards are maintained.
  • Scientific Officer – As a scientific officer you will be expected to operate and manage scientific equipment and/or scientific processes that support others' research or teaching. You shall be responsible for the use and management of laboratory space. You may be required to help with the preparation and delivery of lectures / Labs / Seminars or field work.
  • Medical Representatives- You will be required to engage in this marketing activity through field work. This is a very crucial and vital role because medical representatives are the key point of contact between pharmaceutical and medical companies, the health care professionals, and clients. You should be in possession of excellent product knowledge, be adept at answering queries, providing advice and introducing new products. Exceptional sales skills are very vital for medical representatives.

Job Opportunities After completing D Pharma Degree in Government sector:

  • Pharmacist posts in hospitals – This will relate to dispensing of the drugs and giving advice on its usage for optimal results
  • Work in the Research and Development Team – This will be a sensitive function where confidentiality would need to be exercised.
  • Work in the teaching field – This would entail offering education on medicines, diseases and their prevention.
  • Work in government departments – You would have to work in accordance with the existing requirements based on the instructions given.

Entrepreneurial Career Option:

Depending on the candidate’s aptitude, inclination, financial position and business risk taking abilities, they can start their own business and run their own store. They can start their own wholesale business, surgical items shop, own retail pharmacy outlet, own chemist shop or private drug store. They can start selling medicines based on doctors’ prescriptions.

Community Pharmacist:

Upon completion of this course, a student can opt to become a community pharmacist, where he will be:

  • Working under legal and ethical guidelines
  • Distributing and dispensing medicine
  • Ensuring the safety of the public by supplying safe and correct medicines.
  • Interacting directly with the customers
  • Selling both OTC and prescription based medicines
  • Informing the patients about the dosage and use of the medicines.
