What is the Bachelor of Pharmacy (B. Pharm.)?

Skills required for B. Pharm.

Any educational degree is important, but the development of relevant skills is also equally important to be a successful professional. These skill sets are required for the overall development of a student and make him/her tackle any challenges and situations effectively. To keep pace with the increasing changes, B. Pharm students need to acquire the following skills.

1. Communication Skills

Effective communication skills are a prerequisite for any career. And, as this field includes working with a diverse range of professionals and persons like physicians, paramedical healthcare scientists, researchers, patients, etc. communication, is a mode through which information is provided. This needs to be simple and easy to understand. It is important to have a command on English as well as other local languages. Hence, good communication skills are essential to allow others and yourself to understand information more accurately and quickly. It is the duty of Pharmacists to communicate with patients regarding the dose, when to take it, how to take medicines, what food shall be avoided, etc. Sometimes in a few chronic illnesses, it is necessary that patients should not miss a single dose. It can become a challenge for Pharmacists to communicate the same with patients in a way that he/she can understand.

2. Interpersonal skills

Interpersonal skills are the ability to interact with people with effective listening and communication. This is important to connect with people effectively. Characteristics like respect, empathy, coordination are involved when one works with his/her co-workers. And as a pharmacist you need to have patience, diplomacy and a sense of humour to connect with people.

3. Management Skills

Management skills are required to assist an organization in the accomplishment of its goals. This will also help in maintaining harmony and proper pace in working and thereby increasing the productivity of an organization and manage its important aspects by utilizing his/her technical competencies. 

4. Human skills

Human skills appreciate the role of each person and how important it is to have trust, unity, justice, sympathy, and goodwill towards others for the overall success of any organization.          These skills will help one to attain financial growth, teamwork, productivity, strategic alliances along with environmental awareness, ecology, and sustainability through openness, trust, generosity, and caring.

 

5. Multitasking skills

Pharmacists are involved in a number of activities like maintaining stocks, medicine records, checking expiry of medicines, dispensing them, etc. so one should be ready to work with the many small to big tasks that are assigned.

 

6. Computer skills/literacy

Pharmacists need to be updated regularly with the use of technology for maintaining records. These skills are required for easy storage of customer data, bills and inventory count. As today most of the Pharmacies are technology driven, one must upgrade these skills.

7.  Learning skills

As the Pharma field witnesses continuous innovations, one should be updated with the new medicines and products that rule the market. As Pharmacist, it is necessary to keep oneself, well versed with the knowledge and go on learning new things.

8. Patient counselling

Despite the type of job, Pharmacists should takeout some time to have discussions and explain a patient's medication properly. For example, if a patient frequently forgets to take certain pills, a Pharmacist should try to explain how missing the dose may adversely affect his/her health and also provide a solution.

9. Professional ethics

Having good ethics is a primary requirement of any profession. Ethics involve having moral principles. As a Pharmacist, one should adhere to clear ethical and moral guidelines, regardless of their personal beliefs. You must put the professional needs of your patient before your own personal feelings. One must follow ethical practice with respect to maintaining privacy, confidentiality of consumer’s health and wellbeing and utilize the knowledge and provide care in a proper and professional manner.
